Time management can sometimes seem to be an elusive goal that we’re all working toward. We have those days where we feel like we’re rushing from one thing to the next trying desperately to get everything done. There’s work and kids and all the stuff that in between and by the time the day is done, it can feel like tornado went through our home! We end up having papers piled high on the counters, clothes NOT in the hamper or laundry room, and when we finally sit down to take care of it all, we’re more stressed than when we started! There are time management mistakes that can add to the stress and clutter to your home. Here are some tips on navigating those mistakes.
Mistake 1: You let your to-do list control you
The biggest mistake people make when trying to manage their time is instead of identifying why you feel overwhelmed by your to-do list, you let your to-do list control you! A to-do list is a great way to stay organized and get everything done. However, if you are letting this-list control your life, it may lead to more stress and cause you to miss the things that require your attention now. Just because sorting the mail didn’t make the list doesn’t mean you shouldn’t do it.
Mistake 2: You don’t have a plan
In the chaos of day-to-day life, we can forget to set goals and make a plan. Whether it’s how many books you want to read this year, or what you want to get done today, it helps to make a plan. Start by setting weekly goals for yourself and your family. Sit down together and make them together. Then, make time each day to work on those goals.
Mistake 3: You don’t have routines in place
When we rush through the day we often let things pile up and get out of hand. Start doing some of the same things on a repeat schedule. Dishes, laundry, helping the kids get ready etc. It doesn’t have to be a long period of time. Blocking out 15 minutes in the morning and evening can be incredibly helpful.
Mistake 4: You let yourself get burnt out
Don’t wait until you are overtired to take care of yourself! If you are burnt out and barely holding it together, you won’t be able to keep things under control. You’ll stop being a gatekeeper for clutter, and you’ll start looking for easy fixes. Take time to do a little self-care each day so you are ready to hit the ground running every day.
Mistake 5: You’re too busy
If you are finding that you are always running around, you may be too busy. When we are too busy we end up more stressed from all the responsibilities and clutter sneaks into our home without us even noticing! If you are finding that you are too busy, take a moment and rethink your calendar. Is everything you’re doing necessary?
Despite our best efforts, we may make these mistakes from time to time. The best thing to do is realize it’s happening and break the cycle. It’ll save you many, many headaches.
